Business Cards are Nothing New

They date back to the 15th century, where they were used in China as calling cards.   The calling card or “visitor card” began appearing in Europe in the 17th century.  In the 21st century, business cards are used as a handy way to pass along contact information.  To get the most bang for your business card buck, make sure that your business card contains three elements:

  1. Print a map to your office on the reverse side of the card.  Marketing pieces that are double-sided are twice as effective.  Give people a visual representation (a map) so they can find you easily.
  2. Make sure that your card includes your website, which is a portal into your practice.  Your website is the electronic hub of your marketing efforts, so be sure to list the website address prominently on your card.
  3. Include a line that says, very briefly, who you are and what you do.  Example for a general dentist: “restorative and cosmetic dentistry.”  Example for an oral surgeon: “We take teeth out and we replace teeth with dental implants.”

Finally, even the best business cards are useless if you do not distribute them.  One doctor told me that he had a perfect year regarding business cards in 2010.  “We locked them in the supply closet, and we didn’t lose a single one,” he joked.

Carry your business cards with you.  Give them out.  Continue the 600-year tradition and you may just connect with some new patients.
